Heat Stress During Arba’een Foot‐Pilgrimage (World’s Largest Gathering) Projected to Reach “Dangerous” Levels Due To Climate Change

چکیده

Abstract Arba'een, a Muslim pilgrimage, is one of the largest annual mass gatherings in world, with date fixed according to lunar calendar. Most pilgrims start their long walking journey from Basra/Najaf toward Karbala (about 70–500 km) and are significantly affected by outdoor weather conditions during this period. Here, based on simulations performed using carefully‐selected climate models, we project that heat stress pilgrimage likely reach “dangerous” level, defined US National Weather Service criteria, end century. Moreover, significant increase consecutive occurrence hot days nights expected within coming decades, which may cause high incidence heat‐related disorders as human body not recover daytime loads. Our study suggests sound adaptation measures stringent mitigation actions must be established ensure safe future.

An adaptability limit to climate change due to heat stress.

Despite the uncertainty in future climate-change impacts, it is often assumed that humans would be able to adapt to any possible warming. Here we argue that heat stress imposes a robust upper limit to such adaptation. Peak heat stress, quantified by the wet-bulb temperature T(W), is surprisingly similar across diverse climates today. T(W) never exceeds 31 degrees C. Any exceedence of 35 degrees...

Presentation of an Operational Program to Reduce vulnerability of outdoor workers to to heat stress and climate change

Background: Outdoor workers are vulnerable to heat stress and climate change due to their occupational and environmental conditions. Short-term exposure to extreme heat (acute exposure) can lead to rise the core body temperature, which it may directly cause heat related illnesses such as mild rash, cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. It is reported that long-term chronic exposure to heat l...

Climate Change Policy: Recommendations to Reach Consensus

1 INTRODUCTION As the fi nancial crisis continues to take its toll on the global economy, another serious challenge looms large: preventing the planet from warming more than 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Policymakers are now faced with the daunting task of stimulating growth without using carbon-intensive practices and stabilizing the climate without dampening economic recovery. If the fi nancial cri...

Bromus Response to Climate and Projected Changes with Climate Change

A prominent goal of invasive plant management is to prevent or reduce the spread of invasive species into uninvaded landscapes and regions. Monitoring and control efforts often rely on scientific knowledge of suitable habitat for the invasive species. However, rising temperatures and altered precipitation projected with climate change are likely to shift the geographic range of that suitable ha...

Projected Shifts in Coffea arabica Suitability among Major Global Producing Regions Due to Climate Change

Regional studies have shown that climate change will affect climatic suitability for Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica) within current regions of production. Increases in temperature and changes in precipitation patterns will decrease yield, reduce quality and increase pest and disease pressure. This is the first global study on the impact of climate change on suitability to grow Arabica coffee. W...
